WordPress Local SEO: Setting Up a WordPress Business Site to Rank Locally

By Muhammad Amir, Searcora Digital Ltd

WordPress local SEO is mostly about using the control WordPress gives you and switching off what gets in the way. WordPress runs a large share of small business websites, and it can do everything local SEO needs — page-level titles, structured data, location pages, fast hosting — but only if it is set up deliberately. This page covers the plugins, settings and pages that matter, and the mistakes that quietly stop a WordPress site from ranking.

Searcora Digital Ltd is a UK-registered company working remotely with businesses in the UK and abroad, on your Google Business Profile, your website and your listings. Google names three local ranking factors — relevance, distance and prominence — and each section below works on one of them; the full method is in how to rank higher on Google Maps.

Plugins

Choosing a WordPress SEO plugin for local SEO

WordPress needs one SEO plugin to manage titles, meta descriptions and structured data. Pick one and use only one.

  • Yoast SEO, Rank Math or All in One SEO each let you write the SEO title and meta description for every page and post, and control which pages appear in the XML sitemap.
  • Local schema: Yoast Local SEO or Rank Math’s Local SEO module add LocalBusiness structured data, opening hours and location details without hand-coding.
  • Never run two SEO plugins at once. They output duplicate titles and conflicting schema, which is one of the most common problems on WordPress business sites.
Settings

WordPress settings that block or help rankings

A few core settings decide whether Google can read the site at all.

  • Settings > Reading: make sure “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is not ticked. It is often left on after a redesign.
  • Settings > Permalinks: use “Post name” so URLs read like /emergency-plumber-leeds/, not /?p=123.
  • Sitemap: WordPress produces /wp-sitemap.xml on its own; most SEO plugins replace it with their own. Submit whichever is live in Google Search Console.
  • Media: rename images before upload and write alt text that describes the photo — a finished bathroom, not “IMG_2041”.
Pages

Location and service pages in WordPress

Build service pages and location pages as WordPress pages, not posts, so they sit in a clear structure: /services/boiler-repair/, /areas/harrogate/. Each page needs its own unique content — real jobs, photos and details for that service or area. Duplicating one page and changing the town name produces doorway pages, which Google’s spam policies target. Page builders such as Elementor or Divi are fine, as long as the headings are real H1 and H2 tags rather than styled text.

Speed

WordPress speed for local searches

Slow WordPress sites lose local visitors who are standing outside or waiting for help. Use decent hosting, a caching plugin, compressed images in modern formats, and as few plugins as the site really needs. Test the important pages in PageSpeed Insights on mobile, and fix the largest problems first: oversized hero images, sliders and heavy page-builder scripts.

Local basics

The local SEO that matters on any platform

The platform only changes where the settings live. What ranks a local business is the same everywhere:

  • A Google Business Profile with the right primary category, linked to the matching page on your site — a location page for a shop, the homepage or a service page for a single-site business.
  • Name, address and phone written exactly as on the profile, in the footer and on the contact page.
  • One page per service and per real location, each answering what people search, not one page listing everything.
  • LocalBusiness structured data with your name, address or area served, phone and opening hours.
  • A fast mobile page with a tap-to-call button at the top — most local searches happen on phones.
Avoid

WordPress local SEO mistakes

These are the issues found most often when auditing WordPress business websites.

  • Two SEO plugins fighting over titles and schema.
  • “Discourage search engines” left on after a launch.
  • Tag and category archives indexed with thin content, competing with real service pages.
  • A theme demo’s placeholder text and stock images left on live pages.
  • Unmaintained plugins, which slow the site and create security problems.

How we start

How we start with WordPress sites

  • Check the map pack for your main searches from a few points across the area you serve, to see where you appear and where you do not.
  • Compare your profile with the three that win — categories, services, reviews, photos and completeness.
  • Fix relevance first, because it moves fastest, then work on listings, reviews and local links for prominence.
  • Report what changed in calls, direction requests and website visits from the profile, not just positions.

Questions

Yoast SEO, Rank Math or All in One SEO all handle titles, meta descriptions and sitemaps. For local business schema, Yoast Local SEO or Rank Math’s Local SEO module are the usual choices. Use only one SEO plugin.
Yes. WordPress creates /wp-sitemap.xml automatically, and most SEO plugins replace it with their own. Submit whichever sitemap is live in Google Search Console.
Through a local SEO plugin or module that adds your name, address, phone and opening hours as structured data, or by adding JSON-LD to the page header if you prefer to hand-code it.
Check Settings > Reading first: if “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is ticked, Google is being told to stay away. Then check Search Console for indexing errors.
Pages. They sit in a clear structure, do not get mixed into the blog, and are easier to link from menus and your Google Business Profile.
Yes. I work on WordPress sites every week, from plugin setup and schema to location pages and speed. Message me with your site and town, or hire me through Upwork.
