Plumber SEO: How Plumbing Companies Win the Map Pack and the Calls
By Muhammad Amir, Searcora Digital Ltd
Plumber SEO is local SEO with a stopwatch running. Most plumbing searches — “emergency plumber”, “blocked drain near me”, “no hot water” — are made by someone with a problem right now, and they ring one of the first three businesses in the Google map pack. This page covers what decides that pack for plumbing companies in the UK and the US: categories, service areas, hours, registrations, reviews and the website pages behind them.
Searcora Digital Ltd is a UK-registered company working remotely with businesses in the UK and abroad, on your Google Business Profile, your website and your listings. Google names three local ranking factors — relevance, distance and prominence — and each section below works on one of them; the full method is in how to rank higher on Google Maps.
Categories and services that match plumbing searches
Your primary category is the strongest relevance setting on the profile. Pick it by the work you want most, then add the rest as secondary categories.
- Primary category: Plumber for most firms; Drainage service if drains and CCTV surveys are the core of the business. Add Water heater installation service, Gas engineer or Bathroom remodeler only where they are true.
- Services in customers’ words: blocked drains, leak detection, burst pipes, boiler repair, toilet repair, water heater replacement, bathroom installation.
- One website page per money service, linked from the profile, written for the person with the problem: what you fix, how fast you arrive, what affects the price.
- Plumbing SEO keywords follow problems, not trade terms. People search “toilet won’t flush” and “water coming through ceiling”, so those phrases belong on your pages.
Emergency hours and the “open now” filter
Many plumbing searches are filtered to businesses open now. Set real opening hours, add special hours for bank holidays, and show 24-hour cover on the profile only if someone genuinely answers the phone at 3am — a missed emergency call usually turns into a one-star review. If you do offer it, say so in the description and give emergencies their own page on the website.
Service areas without a fake address
Most plumbers work at the customer’s property, which makes them a service-area business: hide the street address and list the towns or postcodes you actually cover. Plumbing and locksmith listings are a frequent target of fake profiles, so Google often asks trades for extra verification, such as a video showing the vehicle, tools and proof that you run the business. A profile at a virtual office or mailbox address is a common route to suspension. Distance still counts, so you rank most strongly near your real base; reach further towns with genuine area pages that name the areas, response times and real jobs done there.
Registrations, trade directories and reviews
Prominence for plumbers comes from the registrations customers check and the reviews they read.
- UK: Gas Safe Register for any gas work, WaterSafe for approved plumbers, membership of the CIPHE, and Checkatrade, TrustATrader, MyBuilder or Rated People — with your name, address and phone identical to the profile.
- US: your state or local plumbing licence number on the website, plus Angi, HomeAdvisor, Yelp, Thumbtack and the Better Business Bureau.
- Reviews after every job, asked for on the spot with a short link and answered within a day. A reply that mentions the job and the area reads naturally and helps relevance.
- Google Local Services Ads sit above the map pack for plumbing in many US cities and parts of the UK. They are paid, but the same reviews and licences feed them.
The plumbing SEO pages that turn visits into calls
The profile gets the click; the website decides whether they ring you or the next plumber.
- A homepage that says what you fix and where in the first line, with a tap-to-call number at the top on mobile.
- Service pages for drains, leaks, boilers or water heaters, bathrooms and emergencies, each with a price guide or a clear “what changes the price” section.
- Area pages only where you genuinely work, each with real jobs, photos and response times for that area.
- Plumber structured data (a LocalBusiness type) with your name, phone, areas served and opening hours.
Plumber SEO mistakes that cost calls
These are the problems behind most plumbing profiles that never reach the map pack.
- Keywords in the business name, such as “Smith Plumbing 24/7 Emergency Plumber London” — against Google’s guidelines and easy for a competitor to report.
- One profile per town without a staffed base in each.
- Different phone numbers on the profile, website and directories. Use one main number everywhere; if you track calls, keep the real number as the additional phone.
- Bought reviews or discounts for reviews — both against Google’s policies.

How we start with plumbers
- Check the map pack for your main searches from a few points across the area you serve, to see where you appear and where you do not.
- Compare your profile with the three that win — categories, services, reviews, photos and completeness.
- Fix relevance first, because it moves fastest, then work on listings, reviews and local links for prominence.
- Report what changed in calls, direction requests and website visits from the profile, not just positions.
