Local SEO in Sydney: How the Map Pack Is Won Across Greater Sydney
By Muhammad Amir, Searcora Digital Ltd
Local SEO in Sydney is not one ranking. The businesses shown in the Google map pack change from one part of Greater Sydney to the next, because Google weighs how close a business is to the person searching. This page explains how that works in Sydney, and what a business here can do about relevance and prominence — the two factors you can actually change.
Searcora Digital Ltd is a UK-registered company working with Sydney businesses remotely, on your Google Business Profile, your website and your local listings.
If you are comparing a local SEO agency in Sydney with local SEO services from a remote specialist, ask each one to check your map pack from at least three suburbs you serve before quoting. The rules that apply nationwide, from ACCC review guidance to time zones, are on the local SEO Australia page.
Distance: why the Sydney map pack changes from area to area
Greater Sydney covers more than 30 local government areas and hundreds of suburbs. The CBD and North Sydney, Parramatta as the second CBD in the west, Chatswood and the North Shore, the Eastern Suburbs from Bondi to Randwick, the Inner West, the Sutherland Shire, the Hills District, Liverpool and Penrith in the west, and the Northern Beaches each behave like their own local market.
A search for “physio” in Penrith and the same search in Bondi are more than 50 km apart, so the two map packs share almost no businesses.
You cannot move closer to every searcher, and you should not try: a Business Profile at an address you do not operate from breaks Google’s guidelines and is a common reason for suspension. A service-area business should set the areas of Greater Sydney it genuinely covers; a business with real branches should have one profile per staffed location.
Relevance: match the searches Sydney customers make
Trades and home services across the suburbs, health and allied health on every high street, hospitality in the CBD and Inner West, and professional services in the CBD, North Sydney and Parramatta; the narrowest accurate primary category does more than a broad label.
- Primary category: the narrowest accurate one for your main service.
- Services and description: every real service, in the words customers search with.
- A website page about the same service in Sydney: with your name, address and phone exactly as on the profile.
- Your real business name only — keywords in the name break Google’s guidelines.
Prominence: being known in Sydney
Google says prominence includes review count and ratings, links, articles and directories. In Sydney the local sources worth working on include:
- Business NSW and the Sydney Business Chamber — member listings and events.
- Business Western Sydney and local chambers in centres such as Parramatta and Penrith.
- Local news — Sydney metropolitan titles and suburban news sites covering openings, awards and community work.
- Local sponsorships — junior sports clubs, surf life saving clubs and council events in your own suburbs.
- Australian citations kept consistent: Yellow Pages, True Local, Hotfrog, StartLocal, Yelp, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, plus hipages or ServiceSeeking for trades.
- Reviews from real customers, asked for at the right moment, each one answered.
Suburb names, service areas and licence numbers
Sydney customers search by suburb — “electrician Chatswood”, “dentist Parramatta” — so the suburbs you serve should appear in your services, on your website and naturally in replies to reviews. A service-area business can list up to 20 service areas; choose the suburbs where you take work, not the whole city. NSW Fair Trading requires licensed home building and trade contractors to show their licence number in advertising, so put it on your website as well.
How we start with a Sydney business
- Check the map pack from three places — the CBD, Parramatta and the Northern Beaches — for the search you most want, so we see where you appear today and where you do not.
- Compare your Business Profile with the three businesses that win: categories, services, reviews, photos and how complete each profile is.
- Check your citations for the same name, address and phone across the directories above, and fix what does not match.
- Agree the work in order — relevance fixes first, because they are fastest, then reviews, citations and local links for prominence across Greater Sydney.
“Near me” searches in Sydney
“Near me” searches — “SEO expert near me”, “plumber near me” — are decided almost entirely by the map pack, so distance matters most. A Sydney business wins them with a complete, accurate Business Profile at its real location, strong reviews and consistent citations.
