Local SEO for Gyms: How Gyms, Fitness Studios and Personal Trainers Win the Map Pack
By Muhammad Amir, Searcora Digital Ltd
“Gym near me” is one of the most distance-driven searches on Google, and the national chains have the money to appear in it almost everywhere. Independent gyms, studios and personal trainers win by being more specific — “boxing gym”, “women-only gym”, “reformer Pilates”, “24-hour gym” — and by being the best answer within walking or driving distance. This page covers what decides the map pack for fitness businesses in the UK and the US, and what you can change.
Searcora Digital Ltd is a UK-registered company working remotely with businesses in the UK and abroad, on your Google Business Profile, your website and your listings. Google names three local ranking factors — relevance, distance and prominence — and each section below works on one of them; the full method is in how to rank higher on Google Maps.
Categories and the niche you can win
Most independents lose when they compete as just another “Gym”. The category and services should describe what makes you different, because that is exactly what people add to their search.
- Primary category for your main offer — options include Gym, Fitness center, Boxing gym, Yoga studio, Pilates studio, Martial arts school and Personal trainer — with any others that are true as secondary categories.
- Services and classes named the way people search: strength training, HIIT classes, spin, reformer Pilates, women-only sessions, personal training, nutrition coaching.
- A description that states the facilities people filter on — free weights, parking, showers, childcare, step-free access.
- A website page for each main offer, linked from the profile, with the timetable in text rather than an image so classes can match searches.
Opening hours, 24-hour access and staffed hours
Gym searches are often filtered to places open now, so hours need to be exact. If members can get in around the clock, set the profile to open 24 hours and say on the website which hours are staffed. Add special hours for bank holidays and Christmas, when people check before travelling. Studios that only run timetabled classes should show the hours the studio is open for classes, not the hours someone answers the phone.
Class bookings, trials and memberships
Make the first step easy from the profile itself. Add a booking link to your timetable or trial page; if your scheduling platform is a Reserve with Google partner, a booking button can appear on the profile directly. Use Google posts for new classes, timetable changes and seasonal offers, and list memberships and day passes as products with prices where you publish them. People comparing gyms want to know the price and whether there is a contract before they visit, and a profile that answers both gets the visit.
Proximity: winning beyond your postcode
People rarely travel far to train, so distance decides most gym searches. Keep the address and pin exact and make the entrance easy to recognise from your photos. Mobile personal trainers who visit clients or train outdoors are service-area businesses: hide the address and set the towns you cover. Classes held in a hall or park you hire by the hour do not qualify for a profile at that address, because Google does not allow profiles for ongoing classes at a location you do not own or have authority to represent. Beyond your doorstep, rank in normal results with area pages such as “personal trainer in Chorlton” that describe where you actually train people.
Reviews, listings and qualifications
Prominence for fitness businesses comes from reviews and the platforms members already use.
- Reviews asked for at a natural high point — after the first month, a personal best or the end of a programme — and answered. Free sessions in exchange for reviews are against Google’s policies.
- UK: ClassPass and Hussle for passes, ukactive membership, and trainers on the CIMSPA professional register, with your name, address and phone identical everywhere.
- US: Yelp, ClassPass and Mindbody listings, and trainers holding recognised certifications such as ACE or NASM.
- Local links from sports clubs, schools, charity events and races you sponsor or train people for.
- Photos and short videos of the floor, the equipment and real classes, refreshed often — people want to see whether it is their kind of gym.
Mistakes that hold gym profiles back
These are the problems we see most often on fitness profiles that stay out of the map pack.
- “Best Gym Near Me” or class names added to the business name — against Google’s guidelines and easy for a competitor to report.
- A separate profile for each class or instructor at one address, splitting the reviews.
- Hours left as office hours when members train early mornings and evenings, hiding you from “open now” searches.
- No prices anywhere, so comparison shoppers ring the chain that shows them.
How we start with gyms
- Check the map pack for your main searches from a few points across the area you serve, to see where you appear and where you do not.
- Compare your profile with the three that win — categories, services, reviews, photos and completeness.
- Fix relevance first, because it moves fastest, then work on listings, reviews and local links for prominence.
- Report what changed in calls, direction requests and website visits from the profile, not just positions.
