Local SEO for Car Dealerships: How Dealers and Garages Win the Map Pack
By Muhammad Amir, Searcora Digital Ltd
Car buyers research online for weeks, then choose between the dealers they can reach — “used cars near me”, “Ford dealer in Leeds”, “MOT near me”, “car service open Saturday”. The dealers and garages in the map pack get the test drives, the bookings and the calls. This page covers what decides that pack for franchised dealers, independent used-car dealers and auto repair shops in the UK and the US.
Searcora Digital Ltd is a UK-registered company working remotely with businesses in the UK and abroad, on your Google Business Profile, your website and your listings. Google names three local ranking factors — relevance, distance and prominence — and each section below works on one of them; the full method is in how to rank higher on Google Maps.
Categories for sales, used cars and service
A dealership does several different jobs, and each one is searched for differently. The categories on each profile decide which searches it can appear for.
- Primary category for what the profile does: Car dealer, a brand category such as Ford dealer where you are an authorised dealer, Used car dealer, or Auto repair shop for the workshop.
- Services and products listed in buyers’ words — part exchange, car finance, servicing, MOT, tyres, bodywork — on the profile and on a website page each.
- Your real-world name as it appears on your signage. For franchised dealers that name is usually set by the manufacturer; adding “cheap used cars” or a town to it breaks Google’s guidelines.
Separate profiles for sales and service
Google allows public-facing departments with their own customer desk to have their own profiles, and for dealerships that usually means sales and the service centre. Each needs its own category, its own hours — workshops often open earlier and close earlier than the showroom — and ideally its own phone number, so a customer looking for a service booking reaches the workshop rather than the sales team. Do not create departments that have no separate desk or staff: they compete with each other and can be removed.
Vehicle listings and stock pages
Buyers search for the car before the dealer. Give every vehicle in stock its own page on your website with the make, model, year, mileage, price and real photos, and mark it up with Car structured data. Where Google supports vehicle listings for your country — the US is the main market today — your stock can appear on the profile and in search through Google Merchant Center. Remove sold cars quickly or mark them as sold: a buyer who drives over for a car that has gone leaves a review about it. Use Google posts for new arrivals and offers so the profile shows that stock moves.
Proximity and the drive buyers will make
Buyers travel further for a car than for most things, but the map pack still favours dealers close to the searcher, and service customers rarely drive far for an MOT or a repair. Keep the address and pin exact, show the entrance and the forecourt in photos, and set special hours for bank holidays. To reach buyers further out, rank in normal results with pages for the brands and body types you sell and for the towns you deliver to, and say whether you offer home delivery or test drives at the customer’s address.
Reviews, marketplaces and trade bodies
Prominence for dealers comes from reviews and from the marketplaces and trade bodies buyers already trust.
- Reviews after both moments that matter: when the car is handed over and after each service visit. Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, and answer each review, especially those about finance or a fault.
- UK: Auto Trader, Motors.co.uk, CarGurus and Carwow, accreditation with The Motor Ombudsman, and your FCA authorisation shown on the website if you arrange car finance.
- US: Cars.com, CarGurus, Autotrader, Edmunds and DealerRater, with your name, address and phone identical everywhere.
- Local links from sports-club sponsorships, community events and local press coverage of a new showroom or franchise.
Auto repair shops, MOTs and servicing
Independent garages and dealer workshops win on searches such as “MOT near me”, “car service” and “brake repair”, which are almost always local and often urgent. Use Auto repair shop or a more specific category such as Auto body shop or Tyre shop as primary, list every service you offer, and put prices on the website where you can. If you are an approved MOT test centre, say so on the profile and the website — it is one of the most searched local car services in the UK. Booking links, accurate Saturday hours and photos of a clean, working workshop do more for the click than any slogan.
Mistakes that hold dealership profiles back
These are the problems we see most often on dealer and garage profiles that never reach the map pack.
- Keywords or towns added to the dealership name, such as “Smith Motors Cheap Used Cars Leeds” — against Google’s guidelines.
- A profile for every brand or department without a separate desk, staff or phone behind it.
- Sold cars left online for weeks, so buyers arrive for stock that has gone.
- Reviews collected only from sales, while the workshop — where customers come back every year — never asks.
How we start with car dealerships
- Check the map pack for your main searches from a few points across the area you serve, to see where you appear and where you do not.
- Compare your profile with the three that win — categories, services, reviews, photos and completeness.
- Fix relevance first, because it moves fastest, then work on listings, reviews and local links for prominence.
- Report what changed in calls, direction requests and website visits from the profile, not just positions.
