Local SEO in Canada: Map Pack Rankings From Toronto to Vancouver
By Muhammad Amir, Searcora Digital Ltd
Local SEO in Canada is not one ranking. The businesses shown in the Google map pack change from one part of each Canadian city to the next, because Google weighs how close a business is to the person searching. This page explains how that works in Canada, and what a business here can do about relevance and prominence — the two factors you can actually change.
Searcora Digital Ltd is a UK-registered company working with Canadian businesses remotely, on your Google Business Profile, your website and your local listings.
If you are comparing a local SEO agency in Canada with local SEO services from a remote specialist, ask each one which neighbourhoods they will check and how you will see the change in your own map pack.
Distance: why the Canadian map pack changes from area to area
Canadian searches are local inside each metro area: Toronto and the GTA from downtown to Mississauga, Brampton, Markham and Vaughan; Vancouver from downtown to Burnaby, Richmond and Surrey; Calgary across its four quadrants; Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa–Gatineau, Winnipeg and Halifax each with their own centres and suburbs.
A search for “dentist” in Scarborough and the same search in Etobicoke, on opposite sides of Toronto about 25 km apart, return different practices.
You cannot move closer to every searcher, and you should not try: a Business Profile at an address you do not operate from breaks Google’s guidelines and is a common reason for suspension. A service-area business should set the areas of each Canadian city it genuinely covers; a business with real branches should have one profile per staffed location.
Relevance: match the searches Canadian customers make
Home services and trades, dental and health clinics, restaurants and real estate are crowded categories in every Canadian metro; the narrowest accurate primary category and a full list of real services do more than a broad label.
- Primary category: the narrowest accurate one for your main service.
- Services and description: every real service, in the words customers search with.
- A website page about the same service in Canada: with your name, address and phone exactly as on the profile.
- Your real business name only — keywords in the name break Google’s guidelines.
Prominence: being known in Canada
Google says prominence includes review count and ratings, links, articles and directories. In Canada the local sources worth working on include:
- Chambers of commerce and boards of trade — the Toronto Region Board of Trade, the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, the Calgary Chamber and local chambers across the country.
- Business improvement areas (BIAs) — Toronto alone has more than 80, and most Canadian cities have their own.
- Local news — city dailies and community news sites covering openings, awards and community work.
- Trade associations and local sponsorships — member directories, minor hockey and community events.
- Canadian citations kept consistent: Yellow Pages, Canada411, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, plus HomeStars for home services.
- Reviews from real customers, asked for at the right moment, each one answered.
Quebec: French comes first
Quebec’s Charter of the French Language requires commercial publications, including business websites, to be available in French, and the 2022 reforms known as Bill 96 tightened those rules further. A Quebec business needs French service pages, a French business description and French replies to reviews written in French; English can sit alongside it.
Reviews and the Competition Act
The Competition Bureau treats fake or misleading reviews as deceptive marketing under the Competition Act. In 2015 Bell Canada paid a $1.25 million penalty after employees were encouraged to post positive reviews of its apps without saying who they were. Ask every customer the same way, never write reviews yourself, and never offer a reward for a Google review — Google’s policy forbids that too.
How we start with a Canadian business
- Check the map pack from three places — your downtown, an inner neighbourhood you serve and a suburb you serve — for the search you most want, so we see where you appear today and where you do not.
- Compare your Business Profile with the three businesses that win: categories, services, reviews, photos and how complete each profile is.
- Check your citations for the same name, address and phone across the directories above, and fix what does not match.
- Agree the work in order — relevance fixes first, because they are fastest, then reviews, citations and local links for prominence across each Canadian city.
“Near me” searches in Canada
“Near me” searches — “SEO expert near me”, “plumber near me” — are decided almost entirely by the map pack, so distance matters most. A Canadian business wins them with a complete, accurate Business Profile at its real location, strong reviews and consistent citations.
